Crime fiction written from the perspective of a killer does not instruct readers to kill. The artistic legitimacy of transgressive, uncomfortable, and extreme narrative has never been seriously in question among thoughtful readers, because thoughtful readers understand the difference between a story and a prescription — between exploring something on the page and recommending it in the world.
